Episode 10 - Summer Fun

Summer really is the best season! To maximize fun and make the most out of our summer, here are a few tips related to this week’s episode:

Keep Learning

While a season of rest is incredibly important, we don’t want to pump the brakes on learning and growth completely.

  • Summer Skills Review Books. You can pick a specific subject and help your child stay sharp through the summer! These Summer Skills books are a great resource…check them out here.

  • Nicole the Math Lady. Nicole has some amazing programs to help students of all ages with their Math. If your student uses Saxon Math (which we love!), she has a whole program for that. She also has a program to make math fun, called Drill Team, and she even offers a free trial. You can find Nicole the Math Lady here.

  • Summer Reading Challenge. Make a fun reading challenge for your kiddos. Whether it is one book a week, 15 minutes a day, or something else…you know your child. Don’t make it too hard (it is summer, after all)! You can reward them with ice cream, stickers, a field trip, or a movie night. Whatever you do, make it fun!

Summer Bucket List

This is a fun activity for the first week of summer break. Having some big things on here is fun, but not everything needs to be big. Here are some small ideas that might get your creative juices flowing:

  • Go fishing.

  • Camp in the backyard.

  • Swim at night.

  • Climb a tree.

  • Have a picnic.

  • Host a lemonade stand.

  • See a fireworks show.

  • Go to the State or County Fair.

  • Stargaze.

  • Catch a firefly.

  • Make s’mores.

GO Camping

Camping is one of our favorite summer (and fall) activities! If you have a travel trailer, that’s great, but there are also some great places that you can rent a travel trailer from. If you’re brave, you can always go tent camping, or even rent a cabin. Here are a few of our favorite campgrounds to visit:

  • Prophetstown State Park. This is one of our favorite spots close to home. It’s pretty sleepy, and there is a farm and a water park right on site. If your idea of a vacation is quieter (of course, still fun!), then check out Prophetstown.

  • Camp Cedar. This is a little bit more urban with smaller spots, but the best thing is that it is right next to Kings Island! They even offer a shuttle service to and from Kings Island. If your family is full of thrill seekers, this could be a good option!

  • Gulf State Park. This one is one of our absolute favorite spots! Located in Gulf Shores, AL, this beautiful park is close to plenty of things to do! It’s a short bike path to the beach and a quick drive to plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and tourist attractions. If you love the beach, check this one out for sure!
